The benefits of Powder Coating (Source: Powder Coating Institute, Powder coating is a dry finishing process that has become extremely popular since its introduction in North America over in the 1960s. Compared to liquid paint, powder coatings are more environmentally sound, durable, and safe.

The main benefits related to powder coating are the following:



The economic benefit of powder coating is the most common reason to choose powder instead of liquid.
The greatest advantage deals with transfer efficiency and over-spray. The transfer efficiency of powder coating can reach 60-70% and the over-spray can be recovered through the cyclone and re-used. The liquid paint has a transfer efficiency of 30-35%, and approximately 50% of the product evaporates and there is no possibility of over-spray recovery.
The dust does not generate hazardous waste loaded with solvents and avoids the expenses associated with the frequent replacement of the filter. Moreover, the powder is ready to spray and does not need to be mixed or adjusted to achieve the proper viscosity to be sprayed.
Finally, the base product for powder coating is substantially cheaper than liquid paint and a powder coating line is cheaper than a liquid paint line of the same capacity.

Powder coated products are more resistant to diminished coating quality as a result of impact, moisture, chemicals, ultraviolet light, and other extreme weather conditions. In turn, this reduces the risk of scratches, chipping, abrasions, corrosion, fading, and other wear issues.


The advantage of powder is its flexibility and its ability to bend and yield with the material to which it is applied.
From the point of view of production, the main advantage is that when the powder-coated product leaves the oven, it is completely cured in 20 minutes and is ready to be used. Standard liquid paints may take longer to be fully cured and the operation depends on atmospheric conditions. A different humidity can affect the drying of the liquid paint and can cause small different finishing effects in different working conditions (period of the year, location).

Safety and environment

The application of the powder coating requires precautionary measures to avoid inhalation of the powder and its application on the skin. This is a very easy task to handle since the product is a solid and inert (it does not represents a risk when it is not sprayed).
The product does not contain harmful chemicals such as solvents or volatile organic compounds found in liquid paint. There are many environmental benefits of powder coating as well. As mentioned, the powder coatings do not contain solvents and do not release VOCs into the atmosphere. Therefore, it is no longer necessary to purchase expensive pollution control equipment. In North America, companies can comply with the regulations of the United States Environmental Protection Agency in an easier and more economy way.
The waste is not dangerous and can be deposited in the landfill. On the other hand, liquid paint contains harmful chemicals that have been shown to deplete ozone and produce hazardous waste that needs to be eliminated properly.
